Voice recording – either for video course, video live streaming or maybe a podcast

It’s really hard to get sound right. You don’t want to have to set up a entire studio – and assign an entire room just for you to be able to record a few things.

Usually it’s not great to record voice in a office with wooden floor – or colleagues in the background.

So what is the secrets for great sound?

First – it’s your surroundings. So choose a place with carpets.

Any noise is your enemy. So close windows, stay away from aircon sounds. Stay away from people speaking in the background. The clearest sound I have recorded have probably been in a corner desk in the bedroom – as the conditions there are perfect.

Second – you need to choose a microphone. I have tested the Blue Mic Snowball – which I have learned to love. It’s quite big of a portable mic – but stable, clear and a good all around mic.

If you only are going for recoding your own voice, then you can take the cheap one. Are you going to record more than one person – then take the more expensive.

The expensive version have omni-directional recording – so you can sit six people around it – and still get crystal clear sound. Like if you are doing a Skype Conference or something.

Once you get started with this you will realise that when you get into these professional microphones, then it can easily sound like you are spytting out letters – and you get those not very PRO sounds.

Here you will be needing a voice filter – which can removes this. You absolutely need this! I made an entire Udemy course without – but it’s not worth it. After spending 4 days of recording – I realised that this is really needed. I was SO careful not to make these noises – but after listening weeks after publishing it – then I realised that I certainly needed it!!

Then if you use the same desk all the times, you probably want a better microphone holder than the small once it comes with (which does the job) – it’s a luxury to make your life a bit more comfortable.

Weak Wifi? Slow Wifi? After 10 years of hunting, I have finally found the solution!

So admitted – I’m a bit of a geek. I might be a dad, husband – and a entrepreneur. But deep down – technology is always getting a lot of my attention.

I have been interest in how to connect computers and transfer data from before I even had access to the internet (pre-2000).

But never the less – I have the last 10+ years lived with bad, poor wifi there just wasn’t the same – or wasn’t stable enough.

So far my best advice had been to use a RJ45 (network cable) – and have several access points – to cover the house best.

But – in a rental flat – or in a house with several floors it’s hard to make holes in walls, floors etc. And you just don’t want to have cables every where.

I have for many years heard that you can transfer your data through the electric sockets – but it’s something that I just never believed that would be a good idea to do so. I never gave it a chance.

However, I should have had.

So I got the 500 mbps for about a year ago. I can transfer roughly 60-70 bit through it. You literally just plug directly into your router and into a random extension next to it. And then anywhere in the house you plug it in – press the button on both – and they connect.

Then you have transferred the internet signal – and here you can either connect it to a new router, access point – or you can go for one of the more expensive versions where you already have this integrated.

Semi-pro studio with 2x soft boxes for under £100 / $120!

I have a background as previous photografer – and I do not have any updated equipment. I wanted to do some decent video shooting – and picture taking; for which I was trying to find a cheap solution which still could give great results.

Do remark that this blog post is not directing you to any fantastic high quality equipment – but a practical very cheap solution for good results!!

So I had a good look through Amazon – and many of them have bad reviews. However, what confused me was that there was a few good once in-between!

So I found a product that actually does the job – but it is fragile!

The backgrounds I found was of decent quality – but they are a bit short – compared what is normally known from a photo studio. It can do the job – but creativity need to apply in certain scenarios. The stands it comes with are fine – as long you have a floor where it can stand pretty solid – such as a wooden floor.

I find it very flexible – that you can adjust it as you like in length – depending on a solo video performance – or a dual interview. Phot-R 2×2.26m Adjustable Heavy Duty Professional Photo Studio Backdrop

Then to the actual soft boxes! They are very power efficient as it mostly reminds me of a over dimensioned lamp with a very powerfull 5000K light.

They are flexible to fold out – but the electric part is FRAGILE – and you need to be careful. If you need this less than 10 times a year – then the kit will work fine – but it you need it as a professionel kit – it won’t last you long. However it’s a great starter kit (for soft box light).

How do I find a great compact charger for Samsung S7 / S8 – iPhone 6 / 6S / 7?

I have been through quite a few chargers. Either they are too small (70-80%) of the phone battery capacity – or otherwise they are 2lbs (1kg) heavy.

It have been both crucial and hard for me to find the perfect match – which I do think I have found now.

So I looked both iPhone and Samsung flagships battery capacity. Both are in the region of 2800-3500 Mah. So I looked for something that had 1-2 full charge – and I found a little bulky wonder child, that not only have 2,000 5 star reviews – but also is very affordable! It cost just £7.99 (as per 20th May 2017). And the best thing is that it certainly is pocket size!

I have only had this for about a month – but I have had it’s Big Brother (Poweradd Pilot X7 20,000mAh) (for over a year) – so I have very good experience with the brand.

How to find the perfect External Battery for Macbook PRO / AIR?

If you as I am a heavy Mac user – you’ll have realised that the battery is the limitation. Especially when you do video editing while not being near a power socket – you got like 1-2 hrs.

Even if you don’t and you maybe have long working days while flying, taxi’s or even on trains. If you try to catch a early flight like I often do – I’m on the road at 4am. And I hesitate not going to bed before 11pm. It’s easily 12+ hours I require my laptop to keep up with me – and I do not take many hours before it’s under 40%!

Anyway – I have been looking for an external battery for almost 2 years. I have bought a number of different DC-batteries with various adapters. All of them worked the first few weeks – but none of them were lasting more than 10-20 times usage.

Then I realised that there was a project on Kickstarter or one of those platforms that had a battery delivering 110/220V AC power (=Normal socket electricity from battery). This immediately caught my interest – but I have never seen them coming to Europe!!

After some more intensive research I realised that RAVpower have made a 27.000 Mah AC battery charger – that also can deliver USB-C power (5V/3A).

AMAZON: RAVpower – AC Battery Charger

If this is over your budget – then there is a smaller version of it. Check out this one:
Cheaper MacBook Battery Charger from RAVpower.

DO REMARK: I haven’t tested the smaller one – but I have read from reviews that your laptop charger should use less than 50 watt (220v) – for it to work stable. So it would be fine with the Macbook Air 45w charger.

So is it really that great in reality?
It’s quite heavy. It’s a solid small box that fit’s fine into my laptop (shoulder bag). I haven’t checked the weight but my best guess is that it would be 1-1.5 lbs (under 1 KG).

And yes – it really does charge your laptop with 220 v. So I have made some test with my laptop being on 100% – and then do heavy video editing. This will normally get the battery to get down to 99% once in a while (with normal socket power) – and the battery has no other behaviour.

For the use of the laptop – it provides as reliable electricity.

So how long does it last?
I’m currently testing this!
But as soon as I have better information – I will let you know.

Test 1:
Charge a iPad Air 2 – from 20-100% while being used for light browsing. This takes 1 bar out of 9.
The charging speed feels like truly 2.1A output – but I don’t have the tool to measure it.

I will be performing my test on this:

Test 2:
Charging my Macbook via the 220v 65w charger (original) – battery was 100% – and working heavily with 10 applications for 3 hours and 17 min – before it switched of.

Test 3:
Charging my Macbook via the 220v 65w charger (original) – when the battery was just 9% – and still working quite heavily – but no video editing. It lasted for 2 hours and 53 min – and left my laptop at a 100%.

Conclusion is clear – it’s not a monster – but a helpful piece of equipment to extend your laptops battery life.

So what is this box so great for?
I’m often on very long transportation situations. This means Cabs (longer journeys), flights (=airports without access to sockets), conferences and to work on site with clients without having easy access to sockets.

My laptop battery will normally take me between 3-6 hours usage depending now what I do – and how good I am to close applications.

What is truly amazing about this product – is that it has such a large capacity (yes it doesn’t last forever) – but even when it’s flat – it charge fast – in just about 2 hours. The charger look small and silly – but it’s pretty damn fast. Even one day when both were flat – I could find a socket in a airport and plug both my Laptop and this battery in – and in just about an hour and 10 min – it got about 60% on the battery – and roughly the same on the laptop. From the 60% charge it was letting me finish my charge in the plane + leaving me with about 40-50% battery on the battery box.

It is great for the laptop life where you don’t have a stable office 5 days a week.

Amazon Dash: This seems completely crazy?

I just saw this on Amazon Newsletter – and I do find this incredibly weird if people actually would install this in their homes – on the other side I can see the advantage of that it’s so easy to re-order which takes off the pressure of remembering to buy this in the supermarket. It is taking the web-ordering of supermarket products to the next level – but still? Would this be the next iPhone-2007-moment?

Please share your thoughts!

GET SHIT DONE – What’s the secrets?

– Aaron Levie, Box

It sounds so simple, yet it can feel so hard!

Throughout my life, I have had many periods where I’m shocked over how much I have accomplished – and on the other hand how little I had accomplished.

And I have tried to break this issue down, to try to find out why exactly that I can sometimes achieve 5-10 times more than other times – when the time spent is the same?

First I had to declare that the most valuable asset in my life (except my wonderful wife and son), is my time. I can’t get time back. Every minute there is passing is a moment that I can’t buy back – no matter what I will accomplish in the future.

So with that in mind, I have to start respecting the day much more. Not just setting goals, but accomplishing them.

I’m such a cloudy person that, I sometimes find it hard to get them dirty and productive. I love the broader thoughts, planning, researching, etc. But when it comes to actually bringing it to life, I find it hard to find the energy – even though I love the process of creating.

What I have found out is that I need to have certain tool to help me controlling these processes. So I started to use Trello for all broader thoughts and just things that I do need to share with other people – so any kind of team work-related.

And for the things that are 100% on me, including repetitive tasks that need doing either daily, weekly or monthly simply goes into Todoist.

And for things I can’t miss – so either tasks there is a deadline on – or phone meetings, etc. is always scheduled into Google Calendar (which I use the Business version of called: Google Apps).

Now there is a new tricks, only known by proper power users – and I’m now gonna tell you about it here.

Thank you for watching, and please stay tuned.
